Canine Angel
Last updated: 9 August 2026
At Canine Angel, we respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal information.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, who we may share it with, how long we keep it and the rights you have in relation to your information.
This policy applies when you use the Canine Angel website, contact us, make an enquiry or booking, purchase or attend a service or event, subscribe to our emails, complete one of our forms, communicate with us, or otherwise provide personal information to Canine Angel.
This Privacy Policy should be read alongside any specific information provided when you complete a booking form, newsletter form, event registration or other Canine Angel form.
1. Who we are
Canine Angel is operated by Nikki Brown and is based in Sussex, United Kingdom.
For the purposes of applicable UK data-protection law, Canine Angel is responsible for deciding how and why personal information collected through Canine Angel is used.
Privacy and general enquiries:
nikki@canineangel.co.uk
Telephone:
07850 633030
If you have a question about this Privacy Policy, would like to exercise one of your data-protection rights, or wish to make a complaint about how we have handled your information, please contact us using the details above.
2. The laws that apply
We handle personal information in accordance with applicable UK privacy and data-protection legislation, including the UK General Data Protection Regulation, the Data Protection Act 2018, the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 as amended, and relevant changes introduced by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025.
Our aim is to use personal information lawfully, fairly and transparently and only to the extent reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected.
3. Personal information we may collect
The information we collect depends upon how you interact with Canine Angel.
Contact information
This may include your:
- name;
- email address;
- telephone or mobile number;
- postal address;
- billing or delivery address; and
- preferred method of communication.
Booking and service information
When you enquire about or book a Canine Angel service, we may collect information necessary to understand your enquiry, arrange your booking and provide the service.
This can include information about:
- the service or programme you are interested in;
- appointment dates and preferences;
- your animal’s name, age, breed and background;
- your animal’s behaviour, diet, lifestyle and history;
- information you choose to provide about veterinary treatment, medication or previous support;
- information about the circumstances or challenges for which you are seeking assistance; and
- notes and communications relevant to the service being provided.
Information about an animal is not normally personal information in itself. However, where that information can be connected with an identifiable person, household or client record, we treat the overall record carefully and securely.
Health and wellbeing information
Some Canine Angel services or forms may allow you to provide information relating to your own health or wellbeing.
Information about a person’s health can receive additional protection under UK data-protection law.
We will only request or use this type of information where there is a genuine reason connected with the service being requested.
Where we need to process special-category information such as human health information and explicit consent is the appropriate legal condition, we will ask for that consent at the point at which the information is collected.
You should not provide sensitive information that is not reasonably relevant to your enquiry or service.
Payment and transaction information
When you make a payment, we may receive information such as:
- your name;
- transaction reference;
- amount paid;
- date of payment;
- service or event purchased;
- payment status; and
- information required for accounting or resolving payment queries.
Where payment is processed by a payment provider such as Stripe or PayPal, your payment-card details are submitted to and processed by that payment provider.
Canine Angel does not need to store your complete card number or card security code in order to provide the service.
Payments made by BACS are processed through the relevant banking system.
Email subscription information
If you choose to subscribe to Canine Angel emails, we may collect:
- your first name;
- your email address;
- your marketing consent;
- the date and method of your subscription;
- information required to demonstrate your subscription preferences; and
- information about subsequent unsubscribe or marketing-preference changes.
Our Canine Angel newsletter is managed using Mailchimp.
We currently use a double opt-in process. This means submitting the website subscription form does not by itself complete your subscription. You are asked to confirm the subscription using the confirmation email sent to the address you provided.
This helps ensure that the address belongs to the person requesting the subscription.
You can unsubscribe from Canine Angel marketing emails at any time by using the unsubscribe facility provided in our marketing emails.
Communications
If you contact us by email, telephone, website form or another communication method, we may keep a record of:
- your contact details;
- your enquiry;
- our response;
- relevant correspondence; and
- subsequent communications.
Events and online sessions
Where you register for or participate in an online event, consultation, webinar or similar experience, we may process information required to arrange and administer that event.
If a third-party platform such as Zoom is used, that provider may also process information necessary to provide its platform.
Where an event is recorded, we will aim to make this clear where appropriate. Participants should avoid sharing sensitive or private information in a group session unless they are comfortable doing so.
Website and technical information
When you visit the website, certain technical information may be processed automatically in order to deliver and protect the website.
This can include:
- IP address;
- browser type;
- device type;
- operating system;
- date and time of requests;
- pages requested;
- security information; and
- server or diagnostic logs.
We may also use cookies and similar technologies as explained later in this policy.
4. How we collect your information
Most personal information is provided directly by you.
For example, when you:
complete a form, contact Canine Angel, request information, make a booking, purchase a service, subscribe to emails, register for an event, make a payment, participate in a consultation or communicate with Nikki.
Some technical information is collected automatically by the website, hosting infrastructure and security systems.
We may also receive limited information from organisations involved in providing a service to you, such as a payment processor confirming that a transaction has been completed.
5. Why we use your information and our lawful bases
We only use personal information when we have a lawful reason to do so.
Enquiries and requested services
We use your information to respond to enquiries, discuss potential services, provide requested information and take steps towards entering into an agreement with you.
Depending upon the circumstances, this processing may be necessary to take steps at your request before entering into a contract or may be necessary for our legitimate interest in responding to people who contact Canine Angel.
Providing Canine Angel services
We use personal information to administer bookings, communicate with clients, prepare for sessions, deliver agreed services, provide relevant follow-up and manage our relationship with you.
Where this information is necessary to provide a service you have purchased or requested, our lawful basis will normally be performance of a contract or taking steps at your request before entering into one.
Payments, records and administration
We process transaction and business records for payment administration, bookkeeping, accounting, taxation, fraud prevention and the management of Canine Angel.
Depending upon the purpose, this processing may be necessary for performance of our contract with you, compliance with a legal obligation or our legitimate interests in operating and protecting the business.
Email newsletters and promotional communications
Where we ask you to opt in to Canine Angel marketing emails, our lawful basis is your consent.
We will explain what you are agreeing to before you subscribe.
We do not require you to agree to marketing as a condition of purchasing an unrelated Canine Angel service.
You can withdraw your marketing consent at any time.
Withdrawing marketing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing that took place before you withdrew it.
Website security and preventing abuse
We may process limited technical information for our legitimate interests in securing the website, identifying malicious or fraudulent activity, preventing spam, diagnosing technical problems and maintaining reliable services.
Legal obligations and disputes
We may process or retain information where reasonably necessary to comply with a legal or regulatory requirement, establish or defend legal rights, deal with a complaint, respond to a lawful request or protect the rights and safety of Canine Angel, its clients or others.
6. Special-category information
Certain types of personal information, including information about a person’s health, receive additional legal protection.
Canine Angel’s work primarily concerns animals, but some services or communications may involve information about an owner’s health or wellbeing.
Where human special-category information is genuinely necessary, we will identify both an appropriate lawful basis and an appropriate additional condition for processing it.
Where explicit consent is relied upon, we will make that consent clear and separate and you may withdraw it.
We do not use sensitive health information for unrelated advertising.
7. Email marketing and Mailchimp
Canine Angel uses Mailchimp to manage email subscriptions and send newsletter and marketing communications.
When you subscribe, information such as your name, email address and subscription status may therefore be processed through Mailchimp.
Our newsletter subscription process is intended to give you a genuine choice about whether you want to hear from us.
Marketing consent is not pre-selected for you.
Where double opt-in is used, you must confirm your email address before your subscription becomes active.
Our emails may contain information about:
Canine Angel news, animal wellbeing information, educational material, services, events, programmes, resources and occasional Canine Angel offers.
Every marketing email we send through our mailing system should provide a clear way to unsubscribe.
If you unsubscribe or otherwise object to our direct marketing, we will stop sending the marketing communications covered by that request.
We may retain a minimal suppression record where necessary to make sure that an address which has opted out is not accidentally added back to marketing without a new valid request.
Mailchimp is provided by The Rocket Science Group LLC, part of Intuit. Mailchimp may process data outside the United Kingdom. Where international transfers take place, Mailchimp states that its contractual data-protection arrangements include safeguards for applicable international transfers.
8. Payments and payment providers
Depending upon the service or event, payments may be made through payment providers such as Stripe, PayPal, or through bank transfer.
Where you choose a third-party payment method, that provider processes information according to its own privacy arrangements and legal responsibilities.
We may receive confirmation of the payment and information needed to match the transaction to your booking or purchase.
Payment providers may operate internationally and may use their own fraud-prevention and security systems.
We do not sell or rent payment information to third parties.
9. Who we may share personal information with
We do not sell your personal information.
We may share limited information with carefully selected service providers where this is reasonably necessary to operate Canine Angel and provide services.
These may include:
- website and WordPress hosting or technical-support providers;
- email and communication providers;
- Mailchimp for newsletter and email-marketing management;
- Stripe, PayPal, banks or other payment providers;
- online meeting or event platforms where required;
- IT, backup and security providers;
- accountants, legal advisers or other professional advisers where necessary; and
- government bodies, regulators, law-enforcement organisations, courts or other parties where disclosure is required or permitted by law.
Where a provider processes personal information on our behalf, we expect appropriate contractual and security arrangements to apply.
We only aim to provide a third party with the information reasonably necessary for the relevant purpose.
10. International transfers
Some of the technology services used to operate Canine Angel may process or store personal information outside the United Kingdom.
For example, providers such as Mailchimp and international payment or technology companies may operate infrastructure in multiple countries.
Where UK personal information is transferred internationally, we take reasonable steps to ensure that an appropriate lawful transfer mechanism applies.
Depending upon the circumstances, this may include UK adequacy regulations, approved contractual safeguards, the UK’s International Data Transfer Agreement, the UK Addendum to recognised contractual clauses, or another mechanism permitted by applicable law.
11. How long we keep personal information
We do not intend to keep identifiable personal information indefinitely simply because we can.
The appropriate retention period depends upon the nature of the information, why it was collected, whether a service remains active and whether we have legal, accounting, contractual or dispute-related reasons for keeping it.
As a general approach:
Enquiries that do not become bookings will normally be reviewed and deleted or anonymised when they are no longer reasonably required.
Client, booking and transaction records may be retained for an appropriate period after the service has ended where necessary for business records, taxation, accounting, legal obligations or the establishment or defence of legal claims.
Service notes and sensitive information are reviewed against the continuing need for the information and should not be retained simply for convenience.
Newsletter information is retained while you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, your active marketing status is removed and a limited suppression record may be retained where necessary to honour your marketing preference.
Website and security logs are kept only for as long as reasonably necessary for security, troubleshooting and legitimate administrative purposes.
Where an exact retention period is not appropriate, we use criteria including necessity, sensitivity, legal requirements, contractual responsibilities and the risk associated with continued retention.
12. Keeping your information secure
We take the security of personal information seriously.
We use technical and organisational measures appropriate to the information being processed and the risks involved.
These may include measures such as:
secure website connections, restricted administrative access, account and password controls, software updates, security monitoring, backups, anti-spam protections and carefully selected third-party service providers.
However, no website, email service or method of internet transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
If we become aware of a personal-data breach, we will assess it and take the steps required by applicable data-protection law.
13. Cookies and similar technologies
The Canine Angel website may use cookies, local storage or similar browser technologies.
Some technologies are necessary for the website to operate, maintain security, remember preferences or provide a service requested by you.
Other technologies may be used for website measurement, embedded content or other optional functions.
Where applicable law requires consent for a particular cookie or similar technology, it should not be used for that purpose until the required choice has been provided.
Where an applicable legal exemption permits the use of a technology without consent, we may rely upon that exemption where its conditions are satisfied.
You should be able to manage applicable optional cookie choices through the website’s cookie controls where these technologies are used.
We may provide a separate Cookie Policy or cookie information panel containing further details about technologies currently active on the website.
14. Links and third-party websites
The Canine Angel website may contain links to third-party websites, services, social networks, payment providers or other organisations.
Once you leave the Canine Angel website or choose to interact directly with a separate organisation, that organisation may act as an independent controller of your information.
We are not responsible for the privacy practices of websites or services that we do not control.
You should review their privacy information where appropriate.
15. Social media
Canine Angel maintains social-media profiles and may provide links to social-media services.
If you communicate with Canine Angel through a social-media platform, both Canine Angel and the platform may process information associated with that interaction.
The social-media company determines how it processes information through its own platform, subject to its privacy terms and applicable law.
Please avoid sending particularly sensitive personal information through public comments or public social-media posts.
16. Your data-protection rights
Depending upon the circumstances and the lawful basis being used, you may have rights including:
- The right to be informed about how your personal information is used.
- The right of access to personal information we hold about you.
- The right to rectification if information is inaccurate or incomplete.
- The right to erasure in circumstances where the law gives you the right to have information deleted.
- The right to restrict processing in applicable circumstances.
- The right to data portability where that right applies.
- The right to object to certain uses of your information.
- The right to withdraw consent at any time where consent is our lawful basis.
- Rights relating to certain automated decision-making, where applicable.
- The right to make a data-protection complaint to us and, where appropriate, to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
These rights are not all absolute and the particular rights available can depend upon why and how information is being processed.
We may need to verify your identity before releasing personal information or acting on certain requests.
Your right to object to direct marketing
You have the right to object to the use of your personal information for direct marketing.
You can also withdraw your Canine Angel email subscription at any time using the unsubscribe link in a marketing email.
When you unsubscribe, we will stop the marketing communications covered by that request.
17. Automated decision-making
Canine Angel does not currently use newsletter or ordinary client-booking information to make solely automated decisions about individuals that produce legal effects or similarly significant effects.
If this changes in the future, this Privacy Policy will be updated and the additional information required by law will be provided.
18. Children
The Canine Angel newsletter is not intended to encourage children to submit personal information independently.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe that a child has submitted personal information to Canine Angel inappropriately, please contact us so that we can investigate and take appropriate action.
Information about children that may arise incidentally during a family-based service will only be used where reasonably necessary and appropriate.
19. Making a data-protection complaint to Canine Angel
If you are unhappy with the way we have collected, used, stored, shared or otherwise handled your personal information, please contact us.
Email: nikki@canineangel.co.uk
Telephone: 07850 633030
Please mark an email “Data Protection Complaint” where possible.
We will acknowledge a data-protection complaint within the period required by applicable law and, without undue delay, take appropriate steps to investigate the matter, keep you informed where appropriate and explain the outcome.
Providing relevant details about your concern will help us investigate it.
We may ask for appropriate information to confirm your identity where necessary to protect personal information.
20. Complaining to the Information Commissioner’s Office
You also have the right to raise concerns with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s independent data-protection regulator.
We would appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns directly first, but contacting us does not remove your right to contact the ICO.
The ICO provides information about data-protection rights and complaints through its official website.
21. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.
Changes may be made when our services, technology, service providers or legal obligations change.
The most recent version will be published on this page together with the date it was last updated.
Where a change materially affects how we use information for a purpose based upon consent, we will not assume that an old consent automatically covers a materially different new purpose.
